Homeless residency

Koekelberg

A project to create a piece of artwork to create visibility for the SAAMO residency for people who cannot afford housing. Through a series of creative participatory activities in the neighbourhood we were able to engage not only the residents of this site, but also the local neighbours using the topic of “The Right to the City” as a main anchor. The result was a colourful mural installed on the front gate of the site.

Vision

Create visibility for the site in the neighbourhood and raise awareness about the housing crisis.

Enable dialogue between residents on the topic of “The Right to the City”.

Outcomes

Greater visibility for the site:

By creating a colourful piece of art at a large scale we were able to engage passers by with messages about the housing crisis in Brussels.

Sense of belonging for the residents:

Having the input collected during the workshops directly represented in the artwork allowed the residents to feel heard and connect with their temporary accommodation.

Connection between residents and neighbours:

Our participatory approach allowed the residents and the neighbors to not only meet each other but also to work together towards sharing an important message.
